Early Pregnancy Scan
Our early pregnancy ultrasound confirms pregnancy and assesses early fetal development. Typically performed between 6 and 12 weeks.
Your Early Pregnancy Scan
Finding out you are pregnant is an exciting time for many, but we understand it can also feel unsettling, with lots of families keen to know how the pregnancy is progressing after an initial positive test. Your appointment won’t be rushed and there will be plenty of time to ask any questions you might be holding. There’s nothing you need to prepare for your ultrasound examination, but please remember to arrive with a full bladder. You will receive your scan imags and report digitally the same day.
What This Scan Assesses
Our experienced sonographers will consult with you to understand your journey so far, before performing an early reassurance scan to:
- Confirm your pregnancy
- Monitor and visualise your baby’s heartbeat
- Check if your pregnancy is single or multiple
- Assess the health of your ovaries and pelvic area
Additional Information
We always try to perform our ultrasound examinations trans-abdominally (over the top of your tummy) in the first instance. However, due to the nature of very early pregnancy, it can sometimes be difficult to check everything is progressing as expected. In such cases, we will offer you a trans-vaginal (internal) scan, which will enable us to have a much better visual on your baby. This is completely optional and there will be a trained chaperone available, if required.

Onward Pathways Of Care
Please note that in early pregnancy, it can be very difficult to see your baby on a scan. This could be because it’s just a little too early, or it could be a sign that your baby isn’t growing as we would expect. It could also be an indication of an ectopic pregnancy. In these cases we’ll work with you on a plan, which may include a complimentary rescan here at Cocoon, or referral to the Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit (EPAU). It’s very important that you seek medical advice if you are experiencing any discomfort or bleeding in early pregnancy. More information is available in our terms and conditions

“I can’t recommend Cocoon enough, we first visited for an early scan at around 6 weeks and we have since been back for more scans because we love it there so much! All of the staff make the experience feel so personal and special from when you first walk through the door. They really do whatever they can to get your scan pictures perfect and nothing is too much trouble”
