Find the Right Ultrasound
Helping You Choose the Most Appropriate Scan
Ultrasound imaging can provide valuable insight into many areas of health, from abdominal organs and soft tissues to reproductive health and pregnancy development.
However, many people are unsure which type of ultrasound examination is most appropriate for their situation.
At Cocoon, our goal is to make the process simple and reassuring. The guide below can help you identify which ultrasound scan may be most suitable based on your symptoms, health concerns or stage of pregnancy.
If you are unsure which scan to choose, our team will be happy to guide you.
If You Have a Lump, Swelling or Localised Pain
Ultrasound is often the first imaging test used to evaluate lumps, soft tissue changes or unexplained swelling.
You may wish to consider:
Lumps & Bumps Ultrasound
Used to assess soft tissue lumps anywhere on the body. This scan helps determine whether a lump represents a cyst, fatty tissue (lipoma), fluid collection or other soft tissue change.
Groin Ultrasound
Used to evaluate swelling or discomfort in the groin area, including possible hernias or enlarged lymph nodes.
Scrotal Ultrasound
Used to examine the testicles and surrounding structures when experiencing swelling, pain or a testicular lump.
If You Are Experiencing Abdominal Symptoms
Ultrasound imaging can provide valuable information about the organs within the abdomen and digestive system.
You may wish to consider:
Upper Abdominal Ultrasound
Examines the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen and kidneys. Often used to investigate abdominal pain, gallstones or abnormal blood test results.
Renal / Urinary Tract Ultrasound
Assesses the kidneys and bladder to investigate urinary symptoms, kidney stones or abnormal kidney function tests.
Small Bowel Ultrasound
Used to examine sections of the small intestine and surrounding structures when investigating digestive symptoms.
Aorta Ultrasound
Examines the abdominal aorta to identify enlargement or aneurysm formation.
Women's Health and Fertility Scans
Ultrasound plays an important role in assessing reproductive and gynaecological health.
You may wish to consider:
Well-Woman Ultrasound
Assesses the uterus and ovaries, helping identify conditions such as ovarian cysts or fibroids.
Fertility Pelvic Ultrasound
Often used as part of fertility assessment, examining ovarian follicles, uterus structure and endometrial lining.
Endometrial Thickness Ultrasound
Measures the thickness of the uterine lining, which can be helpful when investigating irregular bleeding or fertility concerns.
Pregnancy Ultrasound
Ultrasound imaging is widely used throughout pregnancy to monitor development, provide reassurance and assess fetal wellbeing.
You may wish to consider:
Early Pregnancy Scan
Typically performed between 6–12 weeks to confirm pregnancy and assess early development.
Reassurance Scan
Provides additional reassurance between routine pregnancy scans.
Gender Scan
Performed from around 16 weeks onwards to determine the baby's sex.
Growth Scan
Used later in pregnancy to assess how the baby is developing.
Presentation Scan
Determines your baby's position during the later stages of pregnancy.
4D Scan
Provides detailed real-time images of your baby's facial features and movements.
Early Gender Testing
Some parents wish to learn their baby's sex earlier in pregnancy.
Early Gender Test
A blood test that analyses fetal DNA circulating in the mother's bloodstream.
Early Gender Test & Scan
Combines the early gender blood test with an ultrasound examination for additional reassurance.
